Elementary Anti-Bias Curriculum

Elementary Anti-bias Curriculum

cartoon of students holding hands around the globeThe Anti-bias Curriculum is arranged in tables. Clicking on an underlined link in any folder will allow you to access a file.

The first folder, the Resource Folder, contains the table of contents and teacher resource materials such as definitions, suggestions for teaching humanistic education that emphasizes personal empowerment and community building, role play guidelines, suggestions for teaching students how to treat each with empathy and respect, the difference between bullying and prejudice, a checklist for assessing visual materials in the classroom, a guide to books that help break gender role stereotypes and the continuum for diversity education upon which the curriculum is based.

At the very minimum it is suggested that you download the Resource folder and the folders for each grade level you teach

Each grade level folder is arranged in the same way. Lessons are in separate folders which are labeled with the topic theme. The same five topic themes run through each grade level and correspond to the various sections of the diversity continuum:

  • Topic One: You and Your Uniqueness
  • Topic Two: Similarities and Differences
  • Topic Three: Your Culture and the Culture of Others
  • Topic Four: Understanding Prejudice, Stereotypes and Discrimination
  • Topic Five: Becoming Allies and Advocates

Because the continuum provides a sequence for anti-bias developmental growth, the lessons should be taught in sequential order by topic as listed above.

Within each topic folder, you will find the lesson that goes with the topic and all needed materials for the implementation of that lesson.

Most of the files are in .PDF format, but some topic folders also contain PowerPoint presentations and/or video clips to be used in the lessons. All PowerPoint presentations have been provided in two different formats: .PPT and .PPS. All have been created using the 97-2003 version of PowerPoint.

Video clips are also provided in two formats: as mp4 files and AVI files. Finally, a lesson for Grade 2 also contains a sample Excel chart created with the 97-2003 version of Excel which the teacher may choose to adapt for his/her class. All files can be downloaded to your computer.
