GUSD is proud to celebrate bilingualism and biliteracy! All GUSD students are eligible to receive a GUSD Bilingual Competency Award. Additionally, qualifying students may receive a California State Seal of Biliteracy designation on their official transcript.
The GUSD Bilingual Competency Award and the State Seal are two different awards with different qualifying criteria.
About the Award
The GUSD Bilingual Competency Award includes a Certificate of Bilingual Competency, a silver medal (for one language in addition to English) or gold medal (for two or more languages in addition to English), and a special seal on the student’s diploma. Students may receive the Bilingual Competency Award in more than one language.
Award Criteria
Successfully complete all high school graduation requirements in English.
AND
If a student's primary language is other than English, they must pass the ELPAC oral speaking section with a 4.
AND ONE OF THE FOLLOWING
Receive a score of 3 or higher on the Advanced Placement (AP) exam for world language.
OR
Successfully complete the GUSD four-year course of study in the same world language receiving a GPA of 3.0 in those world language classes.
OR
Complete the highest course of study in a GUSD world language course with a grade of “B” or better.
OR
Pass a foreign government-approved language exam and receive a diploma/certificate of competency for that (non-English) language from the authorizing government agency.
OR
Pass the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) II Foreign Language Examination with a score of 600 or higher.
OR
Pass the GUSD Bilingual Competency Examination (BCE). The exam is offered in Arabic, Armenian, Korean, Russian, Spanish, and Tagalog.
About the Award
The California State Seal of Biliteracy is marked by a gold seal affixed to the student’s diploma or transcript.
Award Criteria
Successfully complete all high school graduation requirements in English with overall GPA of 3.0 or above in those classes.
AND
Pass the (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) ELA exam at or above the “Standard Met” achievement level.
AND
If a student's primary language is other than English, they must pass the ELPAC oral speaking section with a 4.
AND ONE OF THE FOLLOWING
Receive a score of 3 or higher on the Advanced Placement (AP) exam for world language, or 4 or higher on the International Baccalaureate (IB) examination.
OR
Successfully complete the GUSD four-year course of study in the same world language receiving a GPA of 3.0 in those world language classes and demonstrate oral proficiency in the language comparable to pass an AP examination.
OR
Pass the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) II Foreign Language Examination with a score of 600 or higher.
OR
Pass the GUSD Bilingual Competency Examination. The exam is offered in Arabic, Armenian, Korean, Russian, Spanish and Tagalog.
