Verdugo Woodlands Named a California Distinguished School by State Superintendent Tony Thurmond
GLENDALE, CA – Verdugo Woodlands Elementary School has been named a 2025 California Distinguished School by the California Department of Education. This prestigious recognition honors Verdugo Woodlands for its exceptional student performance, strong academic growth, and commitment to fostering a positive school environment.
Established in 1985, the California Distinguished School Award is one of the state’s most important ways to celebrate exceptional schools, districts, teachers, and classified employees. Schools were selected based on data from the 2024 Dashboard, recognizing growth in academic achievement and efforts to create a supportive school climate.
“Excellent elementary schools play a critical role in the life outcomes of our young people. This year’s California Distinguished Schools celebration provides us with an opportunity to recognize the hard work of our elementary educators and school staff who help our students discover passions and experiences that will propel them,” said state Superintendent Tony Thurmond.
“Recognition by the California Distinguished Schools program is a prestigious honor that reflects the hard work, dedication, and commitment of our educators and staff to maximize achievement for every student, in partnership with parents and families,” said Glendale Unified Board of Education President Shant Sahakian. “This award is a testament to the excellence of our educational programs and the positive impact our schools have on the lives of children.”
“Our dedicated administrators, teachers, staff, and families remain deeply committed to high academic achievement while fostering a positive learning culture for every child,” said GUSD Superintendent Dr. Darneika Watson. “I am so proud to celebrate this wonderful recognition with our GUSD community.”
